To create HD YouTube videos, record at either 1920x1080 or 1280x720. YouTube will scale to one of these resolutions.

1080p needs 60 mb/s (4gb / minute)
720p needs 27 mb/s (2gb / minute)

eSATA gives 80 mb/s
USB 2 gives 30 mb/s

To record full 1080p HD videos, you need a secondary SATA, ESATA or USB3.0 hard drive. IDE, USB2.0 and Firewire are not able to write data fast enough to maintain 30 frames per second at 1920x1080.

Hardware requirements depend on the game graphics levels. The more visual effects you enable, the more GPU and CPU power you need.

Run Fraps with the FPS (frames-per-second) displayed. If it stays above 30 while recording, you are good.

Isn't 1080p overkill? Can you tell much difference between 1080p and 720p on YouTube?
720p will work fine, but 1080p is sharper. To clearly see the quality difference between 1080p and 720p,

I took these screenshots on YouTube on the same frame from two videos, the first recorded at 1080p, the second at 720p.

1080p is also for marketing, being able to say we have full 1080p HD videos will generate more "buzz".

For example

Swimming in Moonlight 1080p

Swimming in Moonlight 720p

But 1080p can make text harder to read (games normally use a smaller font).

For example

Character selection 1080p

This video was recorded at 1080p and you can't read the text on the left even at 1080p.

Character selection 720p

This video was recorded at 720p and you can read the text on the left at 720p.
